Patient Advocacy: Navigating School and Community

Juliet Hiznay, JD with ADA slideParents learned real-life, practical tips on how to work with their child’s school system. The session covered the following topics:

  • How to communicate with your child’s school system
  • How to navigate 504/IEP plan information
  • Working with sun protection issues
  • Approaching social issues (P.E. class and classroom accommodations)

Michelle Best, President of the Washington, D.C. Chapter of Cure JM, and JM mom, co-led the session. She shared that the goal of the session was to “give families tools so they can better advocate for their child, particularly in an educational setting. Attendees learned the importance of individualizing accommodations and were introduced to the breadth of school services available to child.”
